Tata Trusts Grants IIM Bangalore Undisclosed Funding for New Undergraduate Campus
The Tata Trusts has committed a grant to the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) to support the development of a new undergraduate campus in Bengaluru. The financial details of the grant were not disclosed.
The new campus, spanning 27 acres and located approximately 27 kilometres from IIMB's main campus, will house the institute's School of Undergraduate Studies. This initiative is part of IIMB's broader strategy to extend its academic offerings to the undergraduate level, maintaining the same standards of rigour and global orientation that characterise its postgraduate and executive education programmes.
According to a statement from IIMB, the grant will be used to develop academic and residential infrastructure, and to establish research clusters in emerging fields. These include artificial intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems, and applied business learning.
Noel Tata, chairman of the Tata Trusts, stated that the support reflects the trust's century-old tradition of building enduring institutions. He cited past contributions to entities such as the Tata Memorial Hospital and the Indian Institute of Science. Tata emphasised that philanthropic capital at an early stage can shape not only physical structures and budgets, but also the character and ambition of an institution.
U. Dinesh Kumar, director-in-charge of IIMB, said the institute has designed programmes that aim to equip students with technical proficiencies while encouraging critical thinking, interpretation of complexity, and evidence-based leadership. He added that the grant will enable deeper investment in faculty, research infrastructure, and the overall campus environment, contributing to a learning ecosystem focused on India's developmental priorities and global capabilities.
The Tata Trusts, established by the Tata family, are among India's oldest and largest philanthropic organisations. They have historically funded institutions in education, healthcare, and research. This grant aligns with their mission to strengthen higher education and foster innovation in the country.
IIMB, founded in 1973, is one of India's premier management institutes and holds the status of an Institute of National Importance. It offers postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education programmes, and is known for its research output and academic partnerships. The move into undergraduate education marks a significant expansion of its academic portfolio.
The new campus is expected to feature state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and student housing. Construction timelines and additional funding sources were not detailed in the announcement.
