Tata Electronics Confirms Cyberattack; Apple and Tesla Data Reportedly Exposed

Tata Electronics, a major supplier to global technology companies including Apple and Tesla, has confirmed that it suffered a cybersecurity incident. The company stated that it detected the breach a few weeks ago and activated its response protocols, emphasising that operations have not been disrupted and manufacturing continues normally.

The confirmation came after a ransomware group known as World Leaks claimed responsibility for the attack and published what it says are stolen files on the dark web. Cybersecurity researchers who examined the leaked data report that it contains over 200,000 files, amounting to more than 630 GB. Among the documents are files allegedly linked to Apple and Tesla, including component designs, manufacturing instructions, and quality inspection standards.

According to a Reuters report, some files appear to relate to Tesla's charging-port controller and its 'Project Highland' vehicle program. However, the authenticity of these documents has not been independently verified.

The incident has triggered an investigation by Apple's cybersecurity team, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. It is also reported that Tata Electronics received a ransom demand, though the company has not publicly commented on this.

This breach comes at a critical time for India's ambitions to become a global manufacturing hub. Tata Electronics has emerged as one of Apple's key partners outside China, assembling iPhones and manufacturing components. Industry estimates suggest Tata now accounts for roughly one-third of India's iPhone production, with Foxconn handling the rest. The company also supplies components to Tesla.

The attack highlights the growing vulnerability of supply chains, where cybercriminal groups increasingly target suppliers that hold valuable intellectual property from multiple clients. Last month, hackers claimed to have breached Foxconn, another Apple supplier.

Security experts say such incidents underscore the need for robust cybersecurity measures across the entire supply chain, especially as India seeks to attract more high-tech manufacturing.
