The process for the 2027 Census began in Tamil Nadu with Chief Minister Vijay completing his self-enumeration. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and the Chief Minister appealed to all residents to participate in the self-enumeration exercise, emphasizing its importance for planning and resource allocation. The census, which is conducted decennially, aims to count every person in the state and collect demographic data.

In Kanniyakumari district, the family of S. Sabari Varman (35), who died in judicial custody, received his body after four days of resistance. The family had earlier refused to accept financial assistance offered by Ministers S. Rajesh Kumar and Srinath. The custodial death has raised concerns, and the case is under investigation.

The National Testing Authority (NTA) released the results of the NEET 2026 re-test late on July 16. Twelve students from Tamil Nadu scored above 690 marks. The original examination held on May 3 was canceled on May 12 due to an alleged paper leak, leading to a re-examination on June 21. The results bring relief to many students who had been awaiting their scores.

The Madras High Court refused to quash an FIR registered against political commentator V. Ponraj (60). The FIR was lodged for derogatory remarks made against women followers of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party during a YouTube interview a few months ago. The court's decision means the case will proceed further.
