Tamil Nadu to Appeal Against High Court Order on Reservation for Islamic Converts

Minister for Energy Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar announced on Saturday that the state government will file an appeal against the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court's order cancelling a Government Order (GO) that provided reservation rights to individuals converting to Islam. Speaking to reporters after a review meeting in Madurai, Nirmalkumar said the case was taken up in a hurry and an appeal would be filed within a few days.

On the appointment of Venkata Narayana as the Delhi Representative, the minister clarified that he is from Andhra Pradesh, not Karnataka. Nirmalkumar stated that Narayana, who stood by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during difficult times, will only handle coordination work in Delhi and will not make major decisions from that position.

Regarding waste management in Madurai, Nirmalkumar said the contract of a private company involved in solid waste collection has been cancelled due to irregularities. He noted that an inquiry has been ordered and action will be taken against the previous contractor, which was awarded the contract during the previous government. The current contractor was found to have committed several irregularities, and a police complaint will be filed.

Responding to questions about the Electricity Department's white paper, Nirmalkumar asserted that the public is well aware of the department's performance over the past 25 years. He highlighted that after tariff changes, the department generated a new revenue of ₹69,000 crore, but emphasized that this revenue must be used to improve service to the public.

On the issue of paddy bags stagnating at procurement centres, the minister said the government plans to construct permanent sheds on government land to replace temporary centres operating on private property.
