Tamil Nadu Schools to Teach AI and Prompt Engineering from Class IV Under New Curriculum

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department is set to introduce a new curriculum for Classes IV to XII that includes subjects on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), prompt engineering, and STEAM education.

At a meeting of the curriculum design committee held in Chennai on Tuesday, officials discussed the framework for the new syllabus. School Education Minister Rajmohan announced that the subject TNSPARK, already taught in government schools, will be expanded. He said, 'Artificial intelligence has advanced, and we will also teach prompt engineering to the students.'

The minister emphasized the need to balance technological education with conventional learning. 'In this evolving AI world, we also need to cultivate natural intelligence in our students to ensure their growth,' he added. The curriculum will give equal importance to arts, with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) education taking precedence.

The committee approved the development of a new curriculum, syllabus, and textbooks for Classes VI-VIII, to be implemented from the next academic year. Experts at the meeting stated that the integration of digital awareness and emerging technologies will be done with an emphasis on ethics, equipping learners to navigate the modern world responsibly.

After the rollout for Classes IV-VIII, the curriculum, syllabus, and textbooks for Classes IX-XII will be developed and implemented in the 2027–28 academic year. The committee outlined its objective: to nurture confident, curious, and capable learners who are academically strong, emotionally resilient, and socially responsible.
