Tamil Nadu Government Arts Colleges Prepare for 20% Additional UG Seats in 2026-27

Government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu are preparing to fill an additional 20% of undergraduate (UG) seats for the 2026-27 academic session, in anticipation of a directive from the state government.

Most colleges have completed filling a majority of their seats after the second phase of counselling. At the Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous) in Coimbatore, 1,665 out of 1,727 seats have been filled. The remaining vacancies, across various subjects, are expected to be filled with candidates from Backward Classes (BC), Backward Class Muslims (BCM), and Most Backward Classes (MBC) categories starting next week.

Seats in urban government colleges tend to fill first, while those in rural areas are likely to be filled in subsequent weeks. In Coimbatore district, the Government Arts and Science College for Women in Puliyakulam fills 410 seats annually. Rural colleges in the district include those in Mettupalayam (480 seats), Pollachi (420), Thondamuthur (410), and Valparai (520).

Similarly, in Tiruppur city, most seats have been filled at Chikkanna Government Arts College (1,008 seats) and LRG Government Arts College for Women (1,100). The intake is 864 seats at the Government Arts College in Udumalpet, followed by 500 seats at Puratchi Thailaivi Amma Government Arts and Science College in Palladam.

The additional 20% seats are part of a broader effort to expand access to higher education in the state, particularly for students from disadvantaged communities.
