Tamil Nadu Collector Orders Crackdown on Effluent Discharge into Noyyal River

District Collector C. Muthukumaran has directed the Water Resources Department (WRD) to monitor and prevent the flow of effluents into the Noyyal river in Karur district from neighbouring areas.

During an inspection of the Noyyal Athupalayam Dam alongside senior officials, Mr. Muthukumaran stated that steps are being taken to address pollution in the river. He instructed the WRD to ensure adequate irrigation water for farmers and to stop the mixing of effluents from the borders of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts.

The Athupalayam dam currently holds approximately 10 million cubic feet (mcft) of water, a small fraction of its full capacity of 235 mcft, indicating low water storage.

A positive IOD has previously offset El Niño's effects, as seen in 1997 and 2019.
