Tamil Nadu Assembly: Six AIADMK MLAs' resignations spark political showdown
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly witnessed a stormy session on Tuesday (August 25, 2026) after it was confirmed that six AIADMK legislators had resigned within a month of taking oath. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar stated that the resignations were accepted according to rules, and it was now up to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold by-elections in the affected constituencies.
The issue was raised by DMK MLA S. Austin, who expressed concern that the voice of voters in Maduranthakam, Perundurai, Dharapuram, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai and Karur had been silenced. He pointed out the hard work candidates put into winning elections, noting that senior citizens and differently-abled voters had turned out to cast their ballots with hope. “They would have had to toil hard for a month. Their hopes have been shattered,” he said.
Mr. Austin added that resigning so soon after winning, without attending a single session, suggested the MLAs may have expected a larger benefit. “If someone is ready to give up all this and resign within a month, they could not have done so without expecting a bigger benefit,” he remarked.
Speaker Prabhakar clarified that the matter is now sub judice, and the House cannot intervene. “It is for the ECI to conduct elections in those constituencies. When elections are held, whoever wins will be ready to work for the people,” he said.
Responding to the criticism, Public Works Department Minister Aadhav Arjuna said the government had appointed Ministers in charge of each district to address local issues, including drinking water supply. “The Chief Minister and his office are monitoring the situation,” he assured.
Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin noted that every government has appointed district in-charge Ministers, but the six MLAs had not even attended a single Assembly session. Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami argued that a Minister cannot fully grasp a constituency's problems in a day, whereas an MLA is better placed to represent people's grievances.
Leader of the House K.A. Sengottaiyan expressed hope that elections would be held soon and that the ruling party would win all six seats. He also drew attention to the case of a TVK candidate from Edappadi whose nomination was rejected and who later joined the AIADMK, suggesting that such actions could also be seen as horse trading.
The exchange between AIADMK and TVK members grew heated. Speaker Prabhakar advised Mr. Palaniswami to remain calm, saying, “You have already spoken about their resignation and the loss caused to the party.” He also noted that Mr. Sengottaiyan should have avoided his remarks.
The House later moved on to other business, but the resignations remain a contentious issue, with legal proceedings expected to determine the next course of action.
