Switzerland Edges Colombia in Penalty Shootout to Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

In a tense Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup, Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of extra time. The Swiss advance to the quarter-finals.

Colombia took the lead early in the second half when Juan Quintero converted a penalty. Switzerland responded with a goal from Granit Xhaka, whose shot slipped past Colombian goalkeeper Vargas despite getting a hand to it. The match remained level through the remainder of regulation and extra time, setting up a dramatic shootout.

The penalty shootout saw both teams miss crucial kicks. Davinson Sanchez hit the crossbar for Colombia, while Switzerland's Manuel Akanji sent his penalty over the bar. After five rounds each, the scores were tied 3-3. In the sudden-death phase, Ruben Vargas scored the decisive penalty for Switzerland, sending his team to the last eight.

Switzerland will now face the winner of the next match in the quarter-finals.
