Switzerland edge Colombia on penalties to reach first World Cup quarter-final in 71 years

Switzerland advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw following extra time in Vancouver. The Round of 16 match, played before 52,497 spectators at BC Place Stadium, was a tightly contested defensive battle that produced few clear scoring opportunities.

Neither side managed a shot on target in the final 30 minutes of regulation time, with the match's expected goals total of 0.7 being the lowest of the tournament. Colombia, despite attempting numerous shots from distance, have now scored only twice in their last six matches from 79 attempts—a conversion rate of 2.5 per cent.

Extra time brought the best chances. Colombia's Jhon Lucumí hit the crossbar with a header, and Jaminton Campaz missed a one-on-one opportunity after a Swiss defensive error. Switzerland's goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a crucial save in the penalty shootout, denying Cucho Hernández, while Davinson Sánchez missed the target for Colombia, sending Switzerland through.

The victory marks a historic achievement for the Swiss, who last reached this stage in 1954 when the tournament was also held in North America. Their run in 1994 ended in the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Spain. Colombia, meanwhile, exit the tournament after a campaign that saw them top their group with a stubborn defence but struggle to convert chances.

Switzerland will now face Argentina in the quarter-finals. The match is scheduled to be played next week at a venue yet to be confirmed.
