Surat Lok Adalat Resolves Over 4,800 Cases in a Day, Including Decades-Old Disputes

In a remarkable demonstration of alternative dispute resolution, the Lok Adalat in Surat disposed of 4,865 cases in a single day on Saturday. Among the settled cases were 10 that had been pending for over 20 years and 172 cases that had been pending for more than a decade.

One notable case involved a 10-year-old cheque-bounce dispute over Rs 76 lakh. The Lok Adalat directed the complainant to be paid the amount, bringing closure to a long-standing financial conflict.

The Surat district has topped the state for the fifth consecutive year in terms of the highest number of cases settled through the National Lok Adalat, according to a press release issued by District Legal Service Authority secretary D R Joshi.

The Lok Adalat system, a part of the Indian legal framework, provides a platform for amicable settlement of disputes through conciliation and negotiation. It aims to reduce the burden on regular courts and deliver speedy justice.

The success of the Surat Lok Adalat underscores the effectiveness of such mechanisms in resolving civil, criminal, and family disputes, particularly those that have lingered for years in the formal court system.
