Supreme Court to Review Nilekani Task Force Recommendations on Online NEET
The Supreme Court on Monday (July 27, 2026) stated that it will examine the suggestions of a high-powered task force, led by Nandan Nilekani, regarding the online conduct of the NEET examination.
A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe noted that innovative measures are required, particularly during the transition from physical to online examination mode.
"We need some additional safeguards with respect to cyber security and database protection," the Court observed.
The Bench was hearing a plea filed by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh, following the cancellation of the NEET-UG held on May 3 over alleged paper leak, and the announcement of a re-examination.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, informed the Bench that the Union Government has taken a serious view and constituted a high-level committee. He noted that the committee is headed by Nandan Nilekani, a technology expert, and includes former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath, former Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, IIT Chennai Director V. Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena.
The Court scheduled the next hearing on the plea for Monday, August 3.
On June 1, the Supreme Court had declined to urgently hear Mr. Singh's plea for conducting the NEET-UG 2026 re-test on June 21 in computer-based mode.
On May 12, the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG held on May 3 for medical admissions due to allegations of a paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the matter, and the retest was conducted on June 21.
