Supreme Court Directs Maharashtra Election Body to Submit Zila Parishad Poll Schedule by Friday

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission to submit the schedule for elections to zila parishads (district councils) across the state by Friday. A bench of Justices comprising the Chief Justice of India heard a petition concerning the delay in holding these local body elections, which are mandated by the Constitution.

The court expressed concern over the prolonged postponement of the polls, noting that elected bodies are essential for local governance and development. The State Election Commission had previously cited logistical challenges and the model code of conduct for other elections as reasons for the delay.
