Stephen Fleming appointed England Test coach, Joe Root named captain

England on Thursday announced the appointment of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their new Test coach, with Joe Root taking over as Test captain. The move marks a significant change in England's red-ball setup as they look to rebuild under new leadership.

Fleming, who recently ended an 18-year association with Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings, brings a wealth of experience. Under his coaching, Chennai won five IPL titles. He previously served as New Zealand's longest-serving and most successful Test captain, leading the side in 80 Tests and securing 28 victories. His playing career also included stints with Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, where he captained Notts to a County Championship title in 2005.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the appointment in a statement, praising Fleming's credentials. "Fleming is one of the most highly regarded coaches in world cricket following an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings, and a playing career that led him to be New Zealand’s most successful Test captain in a career spanning 111 matches," the ECB said.

Fleming succeeds fellow New Zealander Brendan McCullum, who has been relieved of his duties as England's red-ball coach but will continue in his role with the white-ball formats. The decision to appoint Root as captain marks a return to the role he previously held from 2017 to 2022 before stepping down. Root is England's leading Test run-scorer and brings extensive leadership experience.

The appointments come as England seek to revitalise their Test fortunes after a period of inconsistent results. Fleming is expected to bring a tactical and disciplined approach, while Root's familiarity with the squad should ensure continuity. The ECB has not yet announced the duration of the contracts.
