Stalin Plays Wait and Watch on Bypoll Contest Amid Party Speculation

Chennai, June 26: DMK president and former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Friday stated that no decision has been taken yet on contesting in an upcoming Assembly bypoll. The statement comes amid growing speculation within the party that Stalin might re-enter the Tamil Nadu Assembly through a by-election.

Recently, DMK strongman K. N. Nehru had indicated that Stalin would soon return to the Assembly, fueling rumours that the party chief could contest from the Tiruchi East constituency. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who had won from both Perambur and Tiruchi East in the 2026 elections, chose to retain the Perambur seat, necessitating a bypoll for Tiruchi East.

When questioned by journalists in Chennai about the possibility of his candidature, Stalin responded, “No decision has been taken yet. I shall let you know after a decision is taken.” The remarks neither confirm nor deny the speculation, keeping party workers and political observers guessing.

Political analysts note that Stalin's entry into the Assembly could strengthen the DMK's legislative presence and provide him a platform to directly challenge the ruling alliance. However, the party is likely weighing various factors, including electoral prospects and internal dynamics, before making a final call.

The Tiruchi East bypoll is expected to be held later this year, and the DMK's decision on its candidate will be closely watched as a barometer of the party's strategy in the post-election period.
