Sri Lankan Navy Holds 10 Rameswaram Fishermen on Poaching Allegations

Ten fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu were held by the Sri Lankan Navy on Wednesday night (August 12, 2026) on charges of alleged poaching in Sri Lankan waters, according to reports.

The fishermen were taken to a port in Sri Lanka in the early hours of Thursday (August 13, 2026). Their names and the exact location of the vessel have not been officially disclosed.

The incident comes just a week after 11 fishermen from Rameswaram, Pamban, Thangachimadam, and Kerala were apprehended by Sri Lankan Navy personnel under similar circumstances.

These arrests are part of a recurring pattern that has fueled tensions between India and Sri Lanka over fishing rights in the Palk Bay. The narrow stretch of sea separating the two countries lies along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), which is often difficult for small fishing vessels to accurately navigate.

Local fishermen argue that they have traditionally fished in these waters for generations, and the boundary line is not always visibly marked. Sri Lankan authorities, however, maintain that poaching is a violation of their sovereign waters and have stepped up patrols in recent years.

Data from fishermen's associations and official records indicate that since 2018, over 500 fishermen have been arrested and about 200 trawlers have been impounded in Sri Lankan naval ports. The financial burden on families is severe, as trawlers are costly assets and their impounding directly affects the livelihood of entire communities.

The Rameswaram fishing community, which relies heavily on daily earnings from fishing, has expressed anxiety over the frequency of such detentions. Many families depend on a single breadwinner, and an arrest can mean weeks or months without income while legal processes are completed.

Diplomatic channels have repeatedly taken up the issue. Both governments have held talks aimed at finding a permanent solution, including measures to prevent fishermen from crossing the IMBL and expediting the release of detained boats and crews. However, no breakthrough has been achieved so far, and incidents continue to occur regularly.

Experts point to the need for a comprehensive approach that combines better communication between the two coast guards, alternative livelihood options for coastal communities, and a clear protocol for handling accidental border crossings. Without such measures, the cycle of arrests and diplomatic protests is likely to persist.

The latest detentions have reignited calls from local political leaders for the central government to intervene and secure the release of the fishermen. Meanwhile, the families of those held are preparing to wait for official communication on their next steps.
