Sreeshankar leaps to silver: Indian long jumper claims second CWG medal with 8.09m jump
Sreeshankar Murali, India's premier long jumper, secured the silver medal in the men's long jump event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Wednesday. He recorded a jump of 8.09 metres, falling just short of the gold medal position.
This is Sreeshankar's second consecutive silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, having also finished second in the previous edition. His performance marks a significant comeback after a career-threatening injury in 2024 that ruled him out of the Paris Olympics.
Tajay Gayle of Jamaica won the gold medal with a leap of 8.15 metres, while Stephen Mackenzie of Scotland claimed the bronze with 8.08 metres. The competition was tight, with only seven centimetres separating the top three athletes.
Sreeshankar's jump of 8.09 metres was just one centimetre longer than his previous Commonwealth Games silver medal jump of 8.08 metres. In the last edition, he lost the gold on countback to LaQuan Nairn of Bahamas.
