SP's Brahmin outreach a positive first step, but trust deficit remains, say community voices

The Samajwadi Party’s renewed effort to reach out to Brahmins in Uttar Pradesh has been termed a “significant beginning” by Brahmin social groups and activists, but they caution that the party still has a long way to go to win the community’s trust. Party president Akhilesh Yadav recently described Brahmins as part of the “Pichhda-Dalit-Alpsankhyak” (PDA) matrix, a move seen as a calculated pitch ahead of the 2027 State Assembly elections.

Shivesh Trivedi, a social activist associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Brahmin Mahasabha, said that while the outreach is welcome, the SP’s traditional support base of Muslims and Yadavs has historically kept Brahmins at a distance. “The Samajwadi Party and Akhilesh Yadav talking about Brahmins and promising respect to the community is a good beginning, but he has to cover a long road to win sizeable votes. Traditionally, the SP is considered a ‘Muslim-Yadav’ party with these communities forming the core of its support base,” he said.

Mr. Trivedi added that Brahmin support for the SP has been limited to isolated constituencies, while the community has largely favoured the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), or the Congress. “Brahmins never supported the SP in large numbers. A section supported the party in some constituencies, but mass support of Brahmins was always for the BJP, the BSP or Congress. To change that, the SP’s words need to translate into policy decisions like what kind of specific policies the party is planning to bring for the Brahmins in its election manifesto, how many electoral tickets the party is giving to leaders hailing from the community, etc.”

Ravindra Pandey, an activist associated with the Brahmin Parishad, emphasised that the community is educated and examines statements closely. He said the SP must clarify its position on a Brahmin Welfare Board, a demand that has been pending with the government for years. “The community consists of educated people. We analyse statements. The larger question is what is Mr. Yadav’s and his party’s stand on Brahmin Welfare Board, demand for its formation from the government is going on for betterment of the community,” he said.

Mr. Pandey also pointed to the role of Brahmin leaders within the party’s decision-making structures. “Appointing a Brahmin as Leader of Opposition in the Assembly is one aspect but how much influence the person had on decision-making within the party, our community examines such aspects. Brahmins moved towards the BSP in 2007 [polls] because [BSP leader] Satish Chandra Mishra was the key person in decision-making of the party and the government,” he added.

Brahmins form over 9% of the electorate in Uttar Pradesh, making them a numerically significant and influential social group. The SP currently has one Lok Sabha MP from the community and a few MLAs in the 403-member Assembly. Mata Prasad Pandey, a Brahmin, serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly from the party.

Ram Dutt Tripathi, a veteran political commentator, viewed the renewed outreach as evidence of an underlying problem. He said the SP’s approach to Brahmins has been ad hoc and lacks continuity. “During [party founder] Mulayam Singh Yadav’s time, the SP used to have influential leaders from all caste groups, who played an important role in the decision making. Presently, that seems absent. The leadership makes statements on occasions but for broader outreach they need continuity and clarity over core concerns,” he said.

Mr. Yadav, a former Chief Minister, recently recalled the friendship between Lord Krishna and Sudama on the birth anniversary of late socialist leader Janeshwar Mishra, suggesting a natural bond between the SP and Brahmins. “Whenever Samajwadi Party has got a chance to govern, it has been respectful towards the community and its members,” he said.

The SP was in power in Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017 under Mr. Yadav’s chief ministership. As the next Assembly election draws closer, the party’s overtures are being watched closely by the community, which could open the door for deeper engagement if the leadership follows up with concrete measures.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
