In Delhi, thousands gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday ahead of a planned march to Parliament by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The bill seeks to make insult to the national song 'Vande Mataram' a criminal offence, amending the 1971 Act that already protects the National Flag, Constitution, and National Anthem.
In a related development, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh urged the DMK and TDP to uphold their legacy of ensuring fairness in the delimitation process, emphasizing that continuing with the 1971 Census as the basis for Lok Sabha seat distribution is crucial for federal balance. The Congress favours extending the freeze for another 25 years, until 2051.
The Supreme Court, in a recent judgment, ruled that the use of four-letter expletives, while abusive, does not constitute obscenity under law. The court noted that words that are vulgar or uncivil cannot be equated with obscenity unless they meet the legal standard.
