Spain Coach Calls Argentina Players’ Post-Match Conduct ‘Intolerable’ After World Cup Final

Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente has strongly criticised the behaviour of Argentina players after the final whistle of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, labelling their actions as “intolerable and unacceptable.” The match, held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, ended with Spain claiming a 1-0 victory.

According to reports and video footage, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in physical altercations with Spain defenders Eric Garcia and Gavi. Spain captain Rodri was also struck in the stomach as he ran past Argentina’s Nahuel Molina while celebrating the winning goal.

Speaking to Spanish public broadcaster TVE shortly after the match, De la Fuente expressed his dismay. “It cannot be allowed. In any case, I find it intolerable and unacceptable from players of that caliber, whom I had been praising in the days before and who have a magnificent coach,” he said.

The Spanish coach did not single out any individual but referred to the overall conduct of the Argentine squad following the final whistle. He noted that such behaviour tarnishes the spirit of the sport and sets a poor example for young fans.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has not yet commented publicly on the incidents. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has also not issued a statement. The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with Spain’s lone goal coming in the 73rd minute through a strike from Ferran Torres.

FIFA has not announced any disciplinary proceedings, but the governing body may review the incidents as part of its standard post-match protocol. Similar incidents in previous tournaments have led to fines or suspensions.

The World Cup final was the culmination of a month-long tournament that saw both teams display high levels of skill and sportsmanship throughout. De la Fuente’s comments highlight a rare moment of discord in an otherwise celebrated competition.
