Spain Clinches Second World Cup Title with Extra-Time Victory Over Argentina
Spain won their second FIFA World Cup title on Sunday, defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at the final in a tightly contested match. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, securing the victory for La Roja in a tournament where they conceded only once across the entire competition.
The goal came from a cross by Pedro Porro from the left flank, which Nico Williams headed back into the path of Torres. The forward struck a half-volley past Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who had made 11 saves during the match but could not keep out the well-placed shot.
Spain dominated possession throughout the game, registering 20 shots compared to none from Argentina in normal time. The defending champions struggled to create clear chances, and their task became even harder when midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card late in regulation time for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi, reducing Argentina to 10 men for extra time.
The victory marks Spain as the first nation to win both the European Championship and World Cup in successive tournaments, a feat they have now accomplished twice. They also became the first World Cup champion to concede only one goal in an entire tournament.
Argentina, led by 39-year-old Lionel Messi, failed to win a major title for the first time in three consecutive major tournaments. Messi, who finished the World Cup with eight goals and four assists, had limited opportunities to influence the game until Spain took the lead. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was unable to replicate his heroics from the previous two World Cup cycles.
The result also ended Argentina's hopes of becoming the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Martinez's outstanding performance kept Argentina in the game, but Spain's persistence paid off in extra time.
Torres's goal was his first of the tournament, making him the seventh different scorer for Spain in a campaign where they never trailed at any point.
