Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Kerala: What It Means for India's Economy and Agriculture

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on Thursday, June 4, 2026. This marks the official beginning of the rainy season in India, a critical event that influences the country's economy, agriculture, and water supply.

Kerala's geographical position on the southwest coast makes it the first region to receive the monsoon. Moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean travel northwest, and upon hitting the Western Ghats, they rise and cool, leading to condensation and heavy rainfall. This process triggers pre-monsoon showers that are vital for preparing soil for the main season.

The southwest monsoon delivers about 80% of India's annual rainfall. It waters unirrigated farmland, enabling the planting of summer crops like rice, pulses, and sugarcane. Timely and adequate rainfall ensures food security and boosts rural incomes. Beyond agriculture, the rains replenish reservoirs, supporting hydroelectric power and drinking water supplies. Stable crop yields also help control food prices, benefiting the broader economy.

From June 2 to 6, the IMD forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala, along with lightning and strong winds of 40–50 kmph. Orange alerts (indicating very heavy rainfall of 11–20 cm) were issued for four districts on June 3, eight districts on June 4, and seven districts on June 5. Northern districts Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad were under orange alert on June 2, while the remaining districts had yellow alerts (heavy rainfall of 6–11 cm).

Regarding El Niño, the phenomenon typically weakens monsoon rainfall and increases heat in India, while La Niña enhances rainfall. The IMD monitors these conditions to forecast seasonal patterns, though no specific prediction for this year was mentioned in the announcement.
