Sonam Wangchuk loses over 9 kg in 19 days of hunger strike, supporters call for govt action
Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk has lost over 9 kilograms of body weight on the nineteenth day of his indefinite hunger strike, according to a statement issued by his supporters on Thursday (July 16, 2026). The statement said his health has weakened significantly.
A medical assessment conducted on Thursday morning recorded his weight at 56.90 kg, a decline of more than 9 kg since the start of his fast. His blood pressure was 101/65 mmHg, pulse 72 beats per minute, oxygen saturation 98%, and random blood sugar 89 mg/dL. He remains under constant medical supervision and is described as mentally alert despite his weakened condition.
Mr. Wangchuk, a noted education reform activist, began the hunger strike to press for changes in the examination system and to address broader concerns of students across India. His supporters have reiterated an appeal to the Government of India to immediately engage with protesters and respond to their demands for examination reforms.
Additionally, the statement called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and urged citizens to join a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20 in support of students and education reforms.
The developments highlight ongoing tensions between student groups and the government over examination policies, which have been a subject of debate in recent months. Mr. Wangchuk's hunger strike has drawn attention to these issues, with various civil society groups expressing concern over his health and the lack of resolution.
