Sonam Wangchuk Loses 8.2 kg on Hunger Strike; Leaders Urge Him to End Fast

New Delhi: Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk has lost 8.2 kilograms since he began an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on June 28, according to organisers. The protest, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in NEET and other examinations.

Several political leaders have appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast, citing concerns over his health. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged him to break the fast, stating that Wangchuk's life is invaluable. Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal also appealed, saying Wangchuk is an asset to the country and that there are other ways to continue the struggle. He announced he would visit Jantar Mantar on July 18.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra urged Wangchuk to end his fast, noting that his protest has already united the country's youth. A group of eminent citizens, including writer Arundhati Roy and actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, also appealed to him to call off the fast while supporting the demand for the minister's resignation.

The CJP protest began on June 20 and has included a march to Parliament scheduled for July 20. Wangchuk's health has been a growing concern, with the hunger strike entering its 16th day. The activists allege irregularities in the conduct of NEET and other exams, calling for systemic reforms.
