Solapur School Collapse: 13 Students Injured, Activist Questions Safety Standards

At least 13 students were injured when a concrete slab collapsed at a Kannada-medium school run by the Solapur Zilla Parishad in Maharashtra on Monday. The incident took place during school hours, causing panic among students and staff. Teachers and local residents quickly responded, pulling the children out of the debris. District council officials reached the spot with an ambulance, and the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Videos circulating on social media showed several children with bandages on their heads. The school building, which reportedly had signs of deterioration, was still in use for classes, raising questions about the quality of its maintenance.

The collapse has drawn sharp reactions from social and political figures. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, took to X (formerly Twitter) to question whether the lives of underprivileged children are considered less valuable than those of politicians’ children. “Are the lives of these kids any less valuable than those of politicians’ kids?” he wrote, pointing to what he called a systemic disparity in safety standards between schools attended by poor children and those available to the influential.

Dipke’s remarks have highlighted a long-standing concern in India about the state of government school infrastructure. Many schools in rural and semi-urban areas function in buildings with cracked walls, leaking roofs, and inadequate sanitation. Often, these issues are neglected until a serious incident occurs.

Government data over the years has shown that a significant number of schools in India lack basic amenities and structurally sound classrooms. While central and state schemes like Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan allocate funds for repairs, implementation is often slow and uneven.

Experts argue that regular safety audits and timely repairs are essential to prevent such tragedies. They also emphasise that local bodies, such as zilla parishads, must be held accountable for ensuring that school buildings are safe for children.

Parents of the injured students have demanded that the administration cover medical expenses and conduct immediate structural assessments of all schools in the area. Some have suggested shifting students to a temporary location until the damaged building is repaired or rebuilt.

The Solapur Zilla Parishad has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. The district administration has assured that an inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and to fix responsibility. Officials have also been asked to inspect similar buildings in the region.
