Sikkim Tunnel Collapse: 8 Workers Dead, Rescue Ops Hampered by Gas Leak
Eight workers were killed after an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Sikkim's Namchi district on Monday, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang confirmed on Tuesday. The tunnel, part of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung in Jholungey, caved in following a landslide, trapping 27 workers.
Rescue operations have been complicated by a suspected gas leak inside the tunnel. Officials reported that several rescue personnel experienced dizziness and lost consciousness while attempting to reach the trapped workers. The gas is believed to be naturally emanating from underground rock formations disturbed by the landslide.
Chief Minister Tamang said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with him to inquire about the situation and assured all possible assistance from the central government. 'His words of concern and compassion for the affected workers and their families, along with his assurance of every possible assistance from the Government of India, have provided immense strength and reassurance to the people of Sikkim during this difficult hour,' Mr. Tamang posted on X.
The exact cause of the collapse is under investigation. Rescue teams are working to clear the debris and ensure the safety of the trapped workers, though the presence of gas continues to pose challenges. Further updates are awaited as operations progress.
