Sigma Advanced Systems Secures ₹1,013 Crore Export Order for 155mm Base Bleed Artillery Shells
Sigma Advanced Systems, a Hyderabad-based manufacturer of aerospace and defence precision components, has secured a $104.9 million (approximately ₹1,013 crore) export order from a North American customer. The order covers the manufacture and supply of 1.47 lakh units of 155mm base bleed artillery shell bodies.
The company stated that the order will be executed over the next six to 12 months. This programme involves producing precision-engineered artillery projectile casings designed for integration into extended-range ammunition systems.
Unlike conventional artillery shells, which encounter aerodynamic drag and turbulence at the base during flight, base bleed shells incorporate a gas-generating unit at the rear. This unit reduces drag, significantly extending the effective range of the system while maintaining full compatibility with existing 155mm artillery platforms used worldwide, according to Sigma.
The contract marks a technological progression for Sigma, which had previously secured orders for 155mm fuzes and M107 artillery shell bodies. Base bleed shells integrate advanced aerodynamics, energetics, propulsion technologies and systems engineering, representing a move up the value chain in artillery ammunition manufacturing.
This latest order aligns with Sigma's strategy to strengthen its engineering capabilities and programme credentials, which are expected by global customers from their long-term strategic suppliers. The order comes amid rising global investment in artillery modernisation, with defence forces across multiple regions focusing on ammunition stockpiling and extended-range fire-support capabilities to enhance operational readiness.
Following the announcement, Sigma's shares closed 5% higher at ₹547.50 each on the BSE.
