Siddhavatam Fort: Where History and Devotion Meet on the Penna River

Siddhavatam Fort, perched on the left bank of the Penna River in Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district, continues to captivate visitors even as restoration work remains incomplete. For Sanjeev Borgaonkar and Shaik Wajid, part of a tourist group from Pune, the fort was meant to be a brief stop. Instead, its imposing structure held their attention long after their families had moved on.

The fort's commanding position, cradled between the Palakonda and Veligonda hill ranges, offers sweeping views of the river and the surrounding terrain. This natural beauty, combined with the region's architectural heritage, creates an evocative experience for those who make the journey. Known also as Sidhout Fort, it stands as a testament to the contributions of successive regional rulers and remains a largely unexplored tourist destination in the Rayalaseema region.

Despite ongoing restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), tourists from neighbouring districts continue to arrive, especially on weekends. The absence of snack stalls and drinking water facilities does little to diminish the site's appeal. "Even the toilets need enhancement," said Mr. Borgaonkar, echoing a common sentiment among visitors.

The fort's location also lends it religious significance. For devotees coming from the south, Siddhavatam is considered the gateway to the pilgrimage centre of Srisailam, revered as 'Dakshin Kashi'. Spread across 30 acres, the site is known for its monumental gateways, ornately carved pillars, and seventeen bastions, along with several places of worship.

Among these is the Siddheswara or Siddhavateswara temple, believed to date to the 13th century. A wall inscription dated 1233 CE, written in a mix of Tamil and Grantha characters, records the construction of the western gopuram. It indicates the temple was already a fully functioning place of worship before the site was fortified for military purposes.

The fort's earliest construction began in 1303 CE under the Matti or Matli kings of the Tuluva dynasty. An older record with the ASI states that it was built by Ananta Raja in 1303 CE. The Matli chiefs were powerful regional figures who rose to prominence during the Vijayanagara Empire, gaining political authority in the Siddhavatam Seema by the 16th century. "The era of King Sadasivaraya of Vijayanagara witnessed weddings with the Matli family, thus increasing their political influence far and wide. The most notable ruler was Matli Ananta Raja, a major regional chief and military leader who patronised temples and public works such as tanks and ponds," explained Sivakumar Challa, founder of the Archaeological Research Group and curator of TTD's SV Museum.

Subsequent centuries saw the fort strengthened and transformed. A 1605 CE inscription on the eastern wall near the old entrance, belonging to Venkatapati Raya II of Vijayanagara, details the political history of the region. The Telugu inscription begins with a Sanskrit verse and records the achievements of Matli Ananta, son of Ellama Raju. After Ellama Raju captured the region from Kondaraju Tirupati Raju in battle, Ananta undertook the construction of the fort and a protective stone wall around the town.

The Matli kings developed the mud fort into a stone fort, according to a study by the University of Hyderabad, leveraging their political connections with the later Vijayanagara Empire. That strategic advantage endures today. The fort remains accessible via the Tirupati-Kadapa and Kadapa-Badvel-Nellore routes, making it a convenient stop for travellers exploring the region's heritage.

Historians and conservationists note that the fort's layered past offers valuable insights into the region's political and cultural evolution. As restoration by the ASI progresses, there is hope that Siddhavatam will reclaim some of its lost glory and attract a wider audience. For now, the fort remains a quiet guardian of history, welcoming those who take the road less travelled.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
