Shreyas Iyer Reflects on Painful Series Losses, Sees Learning Opportunity

India's T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has acknowledged the disappointment of consecutive series defeats against Ireland and England, but views the setbacks as valuable lessons early in the new cycle. India, the two-time defending T20 World Cup champions, lost a T20I series for the first time in three years, suffering a 2-0 defeat in Ireland followed by a 0-4 loss in a five-match series against England, with one match abandoned due to rain.

Speaking about the series scoreline, Iyer said, “It definitely hurts. But I feel that it’s a great learning for me as a captain and also for other players who have played here for the first time. And when I say great learning, it’s all about how you turn up for the tournament. You can’t just have that mindset that you will come to England and you will win the series. You need to work hard, you need to be focused which we were as a team. But I personally feel that they played exceptional cricket throughout in all three departments. So, probably, you see, the results also went in their favour because they were comprehensive in all three departments.”

Iyer took over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav at the start of the Ireland series. The team's performance marked a sharp decline from their previous dominance, having not lost a T20I series since 2021. The captain emphasized the need for a realistic mindset and hard work, while acknowledging England's superior performance across batting, bowling, and fielding.

The defeats have raised questions about India's preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup, but Iyer remained optimistic. “It is good that this happened earlier in the cycle. We have time to analyze and improve. The boys are resilient, and we will come back stronger,” he added.

The series against England saw India struggle with consistency, particularly in the middle overs. England's aggressive batting and disciplined bowling exposed gaps in India's lineup. Iyer, however, refrained from making excuses and stressed on collective responsibility.

As India looks ahead to future assignments, the captain's focus remains on building a cohesive unit. The team is expected to regroup and work on specific areas before the next international series.
