Showcase India's strengths to woo global tourists, PM Modi tells young diplomats
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged young diplomats to project India's civilisational, cultural and geographical strengths in order to make the country a more attractive destination for global tourism. Speaking to officer trainees of the 2025 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he emphasised their role as catalytic agents for India's economic engagement with the world.
Addressing the trainees, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of strengthening the digital presence of Indian missions abroad. He noted that a website is often the first gateway through which people interact with an institution. In this context, he suggested leveraging the 'Bharat ko Janiye' Quiz to generate greater interest in India among young people across the world. He also encouraged the use of artificial intelligence to make such initiatives more engaging.
The interaction comes at a time when India is seeking to boost its tourism sector as part of broader economic growth efforts. Tourism is a significant contributor to the country's economy, supporting millions of jobs and promoting cultural exchange. By encouraging diplomats to actively showcase India's diverse heritage, the government aims to attract more international visitors.
The 'Bharat ko Janiye' quiz, launched by the Ministry of External Affairs, is designed to create awareness about India's history, culture, and achievements among the Indian diaspora and foreign nationals. It has been used as a tool to connect with younger audiences globally.
Experts believe that a strong digital footprint for Indian embassies and consulates can help provide accurate information to potential tourists, investors, and students. The use of AI in these platforms could offer personalised experiences and real-time assistance, making India more accessible to a global audience.
The PM's remarks also underline the evolving role of diplomats beyond traditional political engagement. Today, they are expected to contribute to economic diplomacy, trade promotion, and cultural outreach. By asking young IFS officers to act as catalysts for economic engagement, the Prime Minister reinforced this broader mandate.
