Shiv Sena MP Waghmare Seeks Criminal Case Against Sanjay Raut for 'Low-Level' Remarks
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP Jyoti Waghmare has filed a formal complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, alleging that he made 'extremely low-level and derogatory remarks' against her. In an email addressed to NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma, Waghmare demanded the immediate registration of a criminal case against Raut under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and other laws.
The complaint, sent from Waghmare's official email address, cites specific instances of remarks made by Raut during public speeches and media interactions. Waghmare, a Lok Sabha MP from Maharashtra, stated that these comments were 'meant to demean and intimidate' her and constitute a 'serious violation of women's rights and dignity.' She urged the NCW to intervene and ensure that Raut faces legal consequences.
Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP and prominent leader of the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction, has not yet issued a response to the complaint. His party has a history of heated exchanges with the Shinde faction, which broke away in 2022. The incident adds to the ongoing political rivalry between the two Shiv Sena groups.
The NCW has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and said it will review the matter. Under the Commission's mandate, it can summon both parties, recommend action to authorities, or file a report. Waghmare's legal team has also indicated that they are prepared to pursue the case in court if the NCW does not act promptly.
Political analysts note that such complaints are not uncommon in the volatile landscape of Maharashtra politics, where personal attacks often accompany policy debates. The case highlights broader issues around the treatment of women in public life and the mechanisms available for redressal. The NCW's decision will be watched closely, as it may set a precedent for handling similar complaints against high-profile politicians.
