Shailaja 'Maa' Shinde–Gaikwad Patil, Founder President of Sai Trust, Passes Away at 80
Shailaja “Maa” Shinde–Gaikwad Patil, the founder president of Shri Saibhakt Laxmibai Shinde Trust, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2026, at 7:15 p.m. She was 80 years old and had been suffering from age-related ailments.
Her demise has brought profound grief to the Shinde–Gaikwad Patil family and the global community of Sai devotees, who knew her as a compassionate and dedicated leader. Maa, as she was affectionately called, devoted her life to the service of others through the trust she founded, which carries the name of her late mother-in-law, Laxmibai Shinde.
The Shri Saibhakt Laxmibai Shinde Trust has been involved in various charitable and spiritual activities, inspired by the teachings of Shirdi Sai Baba. Under her leadership, the trust grew into a beacon of hope for many, organising community meals, medical camps, and spiritual discourses. Her work extended beyond the local community, touching the lives of devotees across the world who followed the path of Sai Baba.
Born into a family with deep spiritual roots, Shailaja Shinde–Gaikwad Patil carried forward a legacy of faith and service. Her husband and children, along with numerous relatives and followers, were by her side during her final moments. The family has announced that her last rites will be performed with full honours, respecting the traditions she held dear.
In a statement, the trust's members remembered her as a woman of unwavering faith and generosity. “She was not just a president; she was a mother to all of us. Her guidance and love will be missed immensely,” said a senior member of the trust. Many devotees have been visiting the trust’s premises to pay their respects and offer condolences.
