Second worker dies after Kulgam attack, toll rises to two

An injured worker from Chhattisgarh, who was shot during a suspected terror attack in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, died in a hospital on Saturday, raising the death toll to two. Officials identified the deceased as Bhopendra, who had sustained chest wounds when suspected terrorists opened fire on a group of workers on Friday evening.

The attack took place at a brick kiln in Kulgam's Kelam area. According to officials, Bhopendra was critically injured and was shifted to a hospital in Srinagar the same night. Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

In the same incident, another worker, identified as Deepak, also from Chhattisgarh, was killed on the spot. The suspected terrorists managed to escape under the cover of darkness, triggering a massive search operation by security forces in the surrounding areas.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack and directed security forces to intensify operations against those responsible. In a statement, he said the administration and the entire nation stand with the families of the victims. He also called on security personnel to step up their efforts to eliminate terrorists operating in the region.

Security has been tightened along the route of the annual Amarnath yatra, which passes through parts of south Kashmir. Officials said additional forces have been deployed and surveillance has been increased in the wake of the attack.

Meanwhile, search operations continued in the forest areas of south Kashmir on Saturday. Security forces are conducting cordon-and-search operations to track the attackers. Such attacks on non-local workers have been reported in the past, and authorities have repeatedly assured protective measures for them.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing grief over the loss of lives. Workers from other states are often employed in brick kilns and other manual labour sites in Kashmir. The administration has urged employers to ensure the safety of their workers.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the attackers or any group's involvement. Investigations are underway, and security forces have appealed to the public for any information about the incident.
