Savarkar Quiz Row: Kerala HC Stays Teacher's Suspension

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday (August 19, 2026) stayed for one month the suspension of K. Guruprasad Rai, an Upper Primary school teacher from Kasaragod, who was suspended for including freedom fighter V.D. Savarkar's name in a quiz question.

Justice Viju Abraham issued the interim order while allowing Mr. Rai's petition challenging the disciplinary proceedings initiated against him. The court also issued notice to officials of the Department of General Education and the school manager who had ordered the suspension. The judge made it clear that disciplinary proceedings against the teacher may continue despite the stay on suspension.

Mr. Rai, who teaches at a school in Kasaragod district, was suspended after he reportedly included the question: "Who was the freedom fighter who received the maximum punishment from the Britishers?" in a quiz on freedom fighters. The answer he gave was V.D. Savarkar.

In his petition, Mr. Rai contended that he was being punished for including an answer in the quiz that was not "palatable to society." He argued that the question was factually accurate and part of India's freedom struggle history, and that his suspension was arbitrary and violated his rights as a teacher.

The case has reignited debates around the portrayal of historical figures in educational material. V.D. Savarkar, a prominent freedom fighter and ideologue of Hindutva, remains a contested figure in Indian political discourse. While he is credited with coining the term 'Hindutva' and was a key figure in the independence movement, his role and legacy have been questioned by various groups, leading to differing opinions on how he should be taught in schools.

The High Court's intervention provides temporary relief to Mr. Rai, allowing him to resume duties at least until the next hearing. However, the continuation of disciplinary proceedings indicates that the legal battle is far from over.

The Kerala government's education department had defended the suspension, citing potential disruption of school atmosphere. The matter is likely to be heard again after four weeks, by which time the court may make a more comprehensive assessment of the issues raised.

This case highlights the sensitivity surrounding the teaching of historical figures in Indian classrooms. It raises questions about the balance between academic freedom, factual accuracy, and the need to avoid controversy in a diverse society. The court's eventual ruling may set a precedent for how such issues are handled in educational institutions across the state.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
