Sarnath Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List as India's 45th Site
The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India's 45th site to receive this honour. The decision was announced during the ongoing 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
Sarnath holds profound significance in Buddhism as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Located about 10 kilometres from Varanasi, the site includes the Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar with its lion capital, and several monasteries and temples. The Ashoka Pillar's capital was adopted as the national emblem of India.
The inscription was confirmed by UNESCO in a social media post stating, "New inscription on the @UNESCO #WorldHeritage List: Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, #India." This recognition places Sarnath among globally celebrated heritage sites such as the Taj Mahal and the Qutub Minar.
In August 2025, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed the Lok Sabha that India had submitted a dossier titled 'Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath' to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for the 2025-26 nomination cycle. The successful inscription follows a rigorous evaluation process by the World Heritage Committee, which is one of the two bodies governing the Convention for the Protection of the World's Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Sarnath's inclusion highlights India's rich cultural and religious heritage, attracting pilgrims and tourists from around the world. The site joins a list of 44 other Indian UNESCO World Heritage sites, including cultural, natural, and mixed properties.
