Sambhal Demolition: Alleged Illegal Eidgah Removed from Graveyard Land
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district on Tuesday carried out a demolition drive against a structure alleged to have been illegally built on land designated as a graveyard. The action was taken in Madhan village, following an order from the tehsildar's court under the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code.
The disputed structure, described as an Eidgah, stood on plot number 208, measuring 0.0070 hectares (70 square metres), along the Asmoli-Lodhipur road. According to officials, plots numbered 208, 210, 218, and 417 were originally reserved for use as a graveyard.
Tehsildar Dhirendra Pratap Singh stated that while plot number 210 continues to serve as a burial ground, the land on plot 208 had allegedly been converted into an Eidgah, changing its designated use. “The administration has initiated action to remove the encroachment and restore the land to its original purpose,” he said.
The demolition was carried out by the revenue department with support from a bulldozer, under heavy police deployment to maintain law and order. Officials said the move came after some villagers demanded the removal of encroachment from the graveyard land, prompting the court-ordered action. Further legal proceedings are underway.
