Sakshi Chaudhary secures India's fifth boxing medal at Commonwealth Games
Indian boxer Sakshi Chaudhary assured herself of at least a bronze medal in the women's 51kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday (July 29, 2026). She defeated Northern Ireland's Caitlin Fryers via a unanimous decision in the quarterfinals, becoming the fifth Indian boxer to reach the podium in this edition of the Games.
Using her height and reach advantage effectively, Sakshi controlled the contest from the opening bell. She kept Fryers at bay with crisp jabs and well-timed straight punches, executing her game plan of boxing from long range. "Her strategy was to fight from close range, and she kept clinching. Mine was to box from long range, which is my forte," Sakshi told PTI after the bout.
Fryers attempted to pressure Sakshi with constant aggression and high-volume punches, but the Indian remained composed. She slipped and evaded most attacks before responding with cleaner combinations. The bout featured frequent clinches, and both boxers briefly tumbled to the canvas in the second round, but Sakshi never lost control of the contest.
With this win, Sakshi joins Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), and Jadumani Singh (55kg) as Indian boxers who have secured medals at these Games. The Indian boxing contingent continues to impress, adding to the country's medal tally in Glasgow.
