RSS Chief Criticises Live-in Relationships, Calls Marriage a Discipline That Instils Dharma
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that marriage is a discipline which instils dharma, while describing live-in relationships as a form of degradation that stems from blind imitation of Western culture. He made the remarks at an event on 'contemporary motherhood' organised by Vishwa Mangalya Sabha in Hyderabad.
Bhagwat stated that live-in relationships are an alternative to marriage, but questioned their consequences. 'Marriage is a discipline which instils dharma. Its alternative is live-in relationship. Modernity. What are its consequences? We don't want responsibilities but happiness. Stay together when it is wanted and part ways when not wanted. No responsibilities. What will grow with it? What is growing, look around the world,' he said.
He also commented on Generation Z, calling them imitative and emotional, and said they do not think with a calm mind. According to Bhagwat, what appears genuine to them often appeals. However, he acknowledged that modernity is necessary and that changing with the times is a part of Indian traditions.
In his speech, Bhagwat also addressed LGBTQ issues, stating that they are part of society and should not be looked down upon. He emphasised the importance of mobile phone discipline among parents and the need for conversation within families to address questions from children and other family-related issues.
