Ronaldo Bids Farewell to World Cup After Portugal's Round of 16 Loss to Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career came to a close on Monday as Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 41-year-old captain, who had stated before the tournament that this would be his final World Cup, was visibly emotional after the final whistle.

Ronaldo paused to applaud Portugal's travelling supporters before leaving the pitch in tears. Speaking after the match, he acknowledged the pain of the elimination but expressed no regrets. 'This one hurts deeply,' he said, adding that he had given everything for his country.

Social media reactions poured in from fans around the world, with many expressing gratitude for Ronaldo's career. 'We will never have a player like him. I'm glad I was born in this generation. Thank you, Cristiano Ronaldo,' one user wrote. Another commented, 'Messi and Ronaldo are the best combination of competition in any sport. We're never going to see two players like them again. Enjoy them.'

Ronaldo had previously confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his last. 'Yes, it was my last World Cup, but everything else I'll have time to think about, to be with my family, and not make any decision hot-headed and move on with life,' he said.

Over his career, Ronaldo has achieved numerous records and honours, including five Ballon d'Or awards and multiple Champions League titles. His World Cup journey ends with Portugal's best finish being the semi-finals in 2006.
