Retired Judge Denied Bail in Twisha Sharma Case: Court Cites Serious Charges

A Delhi court on Monday rejected the bail plea of retired judge Giribala Singh, who faces charges in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl named Twisha Sharma. The court observed that the accusations against her are of a serious nature, warranting continued custody during the investigation.

Additional Sessions Judge Gaurav Rao, while dismissing the bail application, noted that the allegations involve a breach of trust and exploitation of a vulnerable child. The court stated that the gravity of the offence and the need for a thorough investigation outweigh the applicant's right to bail at this stage.

Giribala Singh, a former judicial officer, was arrested last month following a complaint filed by the victim's family. The case pertains to repeated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, Twisha Sharma, over several months. Singh is accused of facilitating the abuse by allowing the accused, a relative, access to the victim.

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that Singh, being a former judge, could influence witnesses and tamper with evidence if released. The defence countered that Singh is a woman of advanced age with no prior criminal record, and that she is willing to cooperate with the investigation.

The court, however, found merit in the prosecution's arguments. In its order, it remarked: 'The charges are serious, and the victim is a minor. The applicant's position of authority as a former judge raises concerns about potential interference with the investigation. Bail is rejected.'

The case has drawn widespread attention due to Singh's background as a retired judge and the nature of the allegations. The victim's family has expressed relief over the court's decision, stating that it ensures justice will be served.

Further hearings in the case are scheduled for next month. The investigation is ongoing, with the police examining electronic evidence and recordings that allegedly document the abuse.
