Rayalaseema: From Drought-Prone Region to Emerging Industrial Hub
The Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh, historically known for chronic drought and famines, is undergoing a significant economic transformation. Over the past 15 years, large-scale manufacturing industries have begun to set up operations, attracted by government incentives and improved infrastructure.
Early industrial activity in the region was limited to cotton ginning, textile mills, and mineral-based units in the mid-20th century. Later, state-owned and private enterprises established thermal power plants, cement factories, and renewable energy projects, including ultra-mega solar parks in Kadapa and Kurnool districts.
In recent years, major investments have been announced. The JSW Group is building an integrated steel plant in Kadapa district, with an initial investment of ₹4,500 crore. Defence sector projects include DRDO's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft centre at Puttaparthi, Bharat Forge's defence energetics facility in Madakasira, and a high-precision ammunition unit by HFCL in Sri Sathya Sai district. Royal Enfield is setting up a manufacturing plant near Tirupati, and a Space City is planned near the rocket launchpad at Sriharikota.
The shift began with the establishment of a KIA Motors car plant in Anantapur in 2019, which spurred further investments. Government policies focused on 'ease of doing business' and 'speed of doing business', along with efforts by the State Investment Promotion Board, have been key drivers. The present government continues to promote food processing and horticulture alongside industrial manufacturing.
While the industrial boom is notable, the region still faces challenges from its arid climate. However, the transformation is gradually changing the economic landscape, making Rayalaseema a emerging hub for manufacturing and industry.
