Rashtrapati Bhavan withdraws email hinting at Bangladesh PM's imminent visit

New Delhi, August 21, 2026: The Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday withdrew an email it had sent to the media hours earlier that briefly created the impression that the long-discussed visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India was imminent.

The initial email, issued in the name of Navika Gupta, Deputy Press Secretary to the President of India, was headlined “No change of guard ceremony this Saturday”. It said: “The Change of Guard Ceremony at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan will not take place this Saturday (August 22, 2026) due to the full rehearsal for the ceremonial welcome of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.”

Within hours, a second release from the Rashtrapati Bhavan retracted the earlier communication, stating simply: “A press release issued on the subject ‘No change of guard ceremony this Saturday’, which was issued on August 21, 2026, stands withdrawn.”

The back-to-back announcements added to the buzz around Mr. Rahman’s visit plans, which have been under discussion between New Delhi and Dhaka for some time. According to reports, the plans had recently run into trouble after Bangladesh demanded that India create “propitious” circumstances for the visit by extraditing deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the suspected killers of radical student leader Osman Hadi.

India has not officially commented on the reported demands, and no date for the visit has been announced by either side. Diplomatic sources indicated that negotiations are continuing, but declined to provide details.

The withdrawal of the email is unusual, as official communications from the Rashtrapati Bhavan are typically carefully vetted. Observers noted that the apparent mix-up could reflect internal coordination issues within the government machinery, especially on matters involving sensitive bilateral visits.

The India-Bangladesh relationship has seen both cooperation and friction in recent years. While trade and connectivity projects have progressed, political differences over extradition requests and alleged cross-border activities have periodically strained ties. The reported Bangladeshi demand regarding Sheikh Hasina, who is in exile in India, adds a significant political dimension to any prospective visit by Prime Minister Rahman.

Political analysts say that a formal visit by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister would be a major diplomatic event for the region. However, both governments appear to be treading cautiously, given the sensitive issues at play. Neither side has confirmed or denied the visit as of this report.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan’s withdrawal of the email leaves the status of the visit uncertain. A spokesperson for the President’s office declined to comment further when contacted. The Ministry of External Affairs also had no immediate response.

This is a developing story. More details will be reported as they become available.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
