Rajasthan Prison Murder: Dacoit Jagan Gurjar Killed by Cellmate, Say Police

Notorious dacoit Jagan Gurjar, who faced over 100 police cases, was allegedly murdered by his cellmate in a high-security prison in Ajmer, Rajasthan, on Monday, according to police officials.

Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harsh Vardhan Agarwalla stated that preliminary findings indicate Gurjar was strangled with a gamcha (traditional cotton towel). The superintendent noted that, based on initial examinations, no other injuries were found except strangulation marks on the neck. A postmortem and further investigation are underway.

The accused, identified as Vishnu Jat, was already in jail in connection with a 2023 murder case. Police have ruled out a 'gang war' motive for the killing, suggesting instead that it likely stemmed from a 'petty fight' between the two inmates.

Jagan Gurjar was a well-known figure in the Chambal region, with a long criminal history. He had been lodged in the high-security ward of Ajmer Central Jail. The incident has raised questions about prison security and inmate safety, though authorities have not yet provided details on how the alleged assault occurred within the prison.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are awaiting the postmortem report to confirm the cause of death. No further statements have been made by prison officials or state authorities at this time.
