Raj Kapoor's 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili': Re-examining the Controversy Over Female Nudity
Raj Kapoor, the legendary Indian filmmaker, once described himself as a 'worshipper of nudity' in a biography written by his daughter Ritu Nanda. In the book Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman, he linked this fascination to childhood experiences and used the Urdu phrase 'mugaddas uriyan' (sacred nudity) to explain the recurring bathing scenes in his films.
His last feature film, Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), exemplifies this approach. The film stars Raj's youngest son Rajiv Kapoor and newcomer Mandakini. Decades later, the film is often discussed for its depiction of the female protagonist, Ganga, played by Mandakini, who is shown in scant clothing, including a notable waterfall scene.
The story follows Ganga, a woman from Gangotri who marries a city man named Naren. After he leaves for Kolkata, she journeys to find him, encountering several exploitative men along the way. Critics have noted that the film does not grant her agency, subjecting her to continuous hardship without offering an escape.
Raj Kapoor responded to criticism of the 'scantily dressed Ganga' by asserting that the portrayal was rooted in purity, drawing a parallel to the sacred river Ganga. He told his daughter in the same biography that the faith in the river's purity sustained the innocence of the character.
Mandakini, in later interviews, expressed no regrets about the role. The film was commercially successful but remains contentious. The conversation around Ram Teri Ganga Maili touches on broader issues of objectification and artistic expression in Indian cinema.
