Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Kejriwal Back Jantar Mantar Protesters; Wangchuk Moved to Gurugram Hospital
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, along with several other opposition leaders including NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, a day after a police crackdown on a march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The opposition leaders extended their support to the ongoing agitation over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered four First Information Reports (FIRs) against unidentified individuals for rioting, assault on public servants, and damage to public property during the CJP's 'Sansad Chalo' march on Monday. The police action drew criticism from various quarters.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people from across the country and abroad ordered food to be delivered to the Jantar Mantar protest site, with instructions to give the food to the protestors. The orders included a variety of items such as pizzas, burgers, momos, and full-course meals.
In a separate development, activist Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday evening and shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further treatment, in compliance with an order from the Delhi High Court. Wangchuk had been undergoing treatment following his arrest during the protest.
The protests have highlighted concerns about fairness in examination processes, with the CJP demanding a probe into irregularities. The opposition leaders' visit signals a consolidation of support for the demonstrators, while the police crackdown has sparked debates on the right to peaceful protest.
