Rahul Gandhi Says Amit Shah 'Guilty or Incompetent' Over Police Response to Protests
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police action against protesters during recent demonstrations. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Gandhi said the Home Minister must explain the conduct of security forces, arguing that he is "either guilty or incompetent" if he cannot ensure that law enforcement acts within constitutional limits.
The protests, which took place in several cities over the past week, were held in response to a range of issues raised by opposition parties and civil society groups, including unemployment and alleged government attempts to curb freedom of expression. Reports indicate that police used batons and water cannons to disperse crowds, leading to injuries and temporary detentions. The exact details of the events remain unclear, and local authorities have said they are conducting a review of the actions taken.
Mr. Gandhi's remark came during a press conference where he accused the government of suppressing dissent. "When a Home Minister allows such heavy-handed tactics against peaceful demonstrators, either he is guilty of ordering them or incompetent to control his own police forces," he stated. He urged Mr. Shah to make a statement in Parliament and order a transparent inquiry into the incidents.
The Congress party has echoed Mr. Gandhi's demand, with party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh tweeting that the "nation deserves answers". Several other opposition leaders have also raised questions about the police response, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability.
As of now, the Ministry of Home Affairs has not issued an official response to Mr. Gandhi's remarks. However, government sources have indicated that the police acted in accordance with legal procedures to prevent violence and damage to public property. Some ruling party members have dismissed the Congress leader's allegations, saying they are an attempt to politicise law and order.
Political analysts suggest that this confrontation is likely to intensify as both parties prepare for the upcoming electoral season. The incident has also drawn attention to the broader debate on the right to protest in India, with constitutional experts emphasising that while peaceful assembly is a fundamental right, public order must be maintained.
In the meantime, several human rights organisations have sought access to the detained protesters and have asked the National Human Rights Commission to take suo motu cognisance. The commission is yet to announce its decision.
The demand for Mr. Shah's statement is expected to be raised when Parliament convenes next week. Members of the Opposition are likely to force a discussion on the issue, potentially causing disruptions in the proceedings. The Treasury benches have maintained that the discussion should be based on facts rather than allegations.
Mr. Gandhi, who has been on a nationwide tour to mobilise support for the Congress, said that his party would not let the issue fade away. "We will continue to raise this matter in every forum until justice is served to those who were mistreated," he asserted.
As the political rhetoric escalates, the immediate need for a clear and factual account of the police action remains. The government's response, both in Parliament and in public, will be crucial in determining whether the controversy abates or grows further.
