Rahul Dravid Among Candidates for England Test Coach Role After McCullum's Exit

Indian cricket great Rahul Dravid has emerged as a potential candidate to become England's next Test coach, following the departure of Brendon McCullum from the role, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

McCullum's four-year tenure as England's Test coach ended after the team's 1-2 home series defeat to New Zealand. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that 'the time is right to make a change' ahead of next year's Ashes series. McCullum will continue as head coach of England's One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) sides.

The report lists Dravid, 53, among a shortlist of contenders that includes former England coach Andy Flower and ex-England spinner Richard Dawson. Dravid guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and the 2023 World Test Championship final during his tenure as India's head coach, which ended after the 2023 ODI World Cup. His 'meticulous' approach and deep understanding of the game are cited as attractive qualities.

However, the newspaper noted that Dravid has 'no desire' to coach full-time. The England Test job, which involves fewer matches than a full-time role, could allow him extended periods at home and the chance to contribute to the longest format of the game. 'England, at the very least, should gauge his interest,' the report suggested.

Other candidates mentioned include Zimbabwe's Andy Flower, who was England's most successful modern-era coach, leading the team to three Ashes series victories and the No. 1 Test ranking. Flower has also found success in franchise cricket, including consecutive Indian Premier League titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Richard Dawson, currently head coach of Glamorgan, is viewed as a serious option due to his tactical acumen. Additionally, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, and former Australia coach Justin Langer have been named as possibilities.

The ECB has not commented on the search for a new Test coach, and no formal approach has been made to Dravid or any other candidate at this stage.
