Pune Engineer's Body to Return from Oman in 10 Days After Ship Attack

The mortal remains of Heramb Karmarkar, a 30-year-old marine engineer from Pune, are expected to arrive in the city in at least a week or ten days, according to his family. Karmarkar died after the container ship he was working on was struck by a projectile off the coast of Oman on July 12.

Vivek Tandon, the uncle of Karmarkar’s wife, told The Indian Express that the family is receiving full support from all stakeholders, including the government and the shipping company. “The ministry is constantly in touch with us. We were told the documentation and paperwork takes at least a week or ten days. So we have to be patient and wait till then,” Tandon said.

The incident occurred around 3.30 am IST on Sunday when the container vessel M/V GFS Galaxy, which was carrying cargo, was sailing near Omani waters. A projectile struck the ship, sparking a fire in the engine room and knocking out the propulsion system. The crew anchored the vessel before evacuating into lifeboats.

Karmarkar is believed to have been near the engine room during the attack and was the only crew member unaccounted for. His body was later recovered. The family is awaiting his remains to perform the last rites.
