Pune Airport to Get Direct Metro Connectivity via Kalyani Nagar Station

Air travellers in Pune will soon benefit from a direct Metro link connecting Kalyani Nagar station to the airport in Lohegaon. The new route aims to integrate the airport with Metro services across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, potentially reducing travel hassles for passengers.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol announced on Wednesday that the route from Kalyani Nagar to the airport has been finalised. This follows a meeting with Pune Metro and civic body officials. The proposal now requires approval from the Pune Municipal Corporation, after which it will be sent to the Maharashtra government and then to the central government for final clearance.

Currently, passengers heading to Pune airport via Metro have to alight at Yerawada station and rely on other modes of transport to reach the terminal. This inconvenience has led many to avoid the Metro and opt for private taxi services instead.

Last year, Mohol had directed the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro), the implementing authority for the Pune Metro projects, to explore options for connecting the airport to the Metro network.

The Pune Metro currently operates on Line 1 (PCMC to Swargate) and Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi), with Kalyani Nagar station on Line 2. The Civil Court station serves as an interchange for both lines and will also connect to the upcoming Line 3 (Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar). The proposed Line 4 (Khadakwasla to Kharadi) will also link to Kalyani Nagar station, enabling airport connectivity from all four Metro lines.

In addition, Mohol directed Pune Metro authorities to construct a double-decker flyover from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk as part of the approved Metro route extension. The flyover will have a lower deck for vehicles and an upper deck for the Metro, aiming to reduce traffic congestion on Paud Road. The Metro administration has been instructed to prepare a revised route plan soon.

Mohol also asked for a double-decker flyover from Paud Phata to Vandevi Temple, which is expected to ease travel for commuters going from Deccan towards Warje. He noted that this would free up around five signal intersections from traffic jams.

Furthermore, he instructed Pune Metro to extend the proposed Shewalewadi-Hadapsar-Katraj route up to Chandni Chowk-Wakad, ensuring Metro expansion in all directions of the city, and to prepare a detailed project report for this route.

Mohol also reviewed the status of proposals submitted to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, including the Bhakti Shakti Chowk road expansion and additional Metro lines.
