Puducherry Leaders Honour Kargil War Heroes on Vijay Diwas
Puducherry, July 26: Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy led the state’s tributes to the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War during a solemn ceremony at the War Memorial on Beach Road on Sunday. The event marked the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s victory in the conflict.
The dignitaries placed wreaths at the memorial, followed by a two-minute silence observed in memory of the fallen soldiers. Pro-tem Speaker A. Anbalagan, Ministers P. Rajavelu and V.P. Sivakolundhu, along with several MLAs and senior government officials, attended the function.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed annually on July 26 to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who repelled Pakistani forces from occupied positions in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict, which lasted from May to July 1999, resulted in the loss of over 500 Indian soldiers but secured a decisive victory for India.
The War Memorial in Puducherry stands as a tribute to all soldiers from the union territory who have laid down their lives for the nation. Sunday’s event was a reminder of the enduring gratitude the nation holds for its armed forces.
Chief Minister Rangasamy, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by the armed forces. “The courage and dedication of our soldiers inspire every citizen. We owe them our deepest respect and unwavering support,” he said.
The ceremony concluded with a call for unity and patriotism, with leaders urging the youth to learn from the valour of the Kargil war heroes.
